Dutch Riders Dominate Stoneham Slopestyle

Stoneham (QC), Canada – Dutch snowboarders Charlotte Van Gils and Dimi De Jong each topped the podium in their first World Cup starts ever at Sunday’s last freestyle snowboarding event of the 2012 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup season in Stoneham, and in so doing secured the best result for Snowboard Holland in World Cup history.

Van Gils successfully competed in the women’s slopestyle final at Stoneham, earning 92 points out of a maximum of 100 points for winning first run of a frontside boardslide, 50/50 backside 180 out, cab 540, frontside 360, backside 360 and 50/50 to force Canadians Brooke Voigt into second and Breanna Stangeland to third. Voight has finished in second place at all three of her World Cup starts.

“That was my first World Cup. It was fun,” said Van Gils. “It’s different to all the other tours. Every tour has its own system. I actually really like this one because if you ride well in the qualifying you can directly make it to the finals. It was a fun course and a good week.

“It feels really good to win my first World Cup right away. I wasn’t so sure because I had my ups and downs in practice. During competition I got a lot better and it was good,” she added.

In the men’s competition, De Jong scored the day’s high in his second run with a backside lipslide, boardslide to fakie, cab 720 melon, switch backside 900 tail, frontside 1080 tail and 50/50 to fakie to earn 89 points. Canadians  Jonathan Versteeg, also competing in his first World Cup start, and Maxence Parrot rounded out the podium in second and third, respectively.

“I’m very happy. That was a long and tough week. I’m glad it’s over now,” said a relieved De Jong. “Wrapping up the week with a win is amazing. I’m really tired but it was worth it. I never thought that I could end up on the podium but a few other guys fell in both runs.”

Finland’s Janne Korpi, who finished in ninth on Sunday, nonetheless claimed the Overall Freestyle Snowboarding World Cup title to join his Crystal Globes for the Halfpipe and Big Air World Cups clinched earlier.

Following the conclusion of the Snowboard World Cup’s freestyle season, the race boarders will take center stage on a ramp right in the heart of Moscow, Russia, competing in a parallel slalom on March 3rd.
