Keith Hardy, of Kirkland, Wash., a family physician and team doctor for University of Washington Lacrosse, was in a party that had just summited the 10,781-foot Cascade volcano. They had just begun their descent of the mountain’s northwest side near the Coleman Headwall and were apparently unaware of the cliff band. While others were able to stop in time, Hardy reportedly did not heed calls from his companions and skied off the cliff.

Rescuers over the weekend were unable to reach the victim at 8,200 feet of elevation after being turned back by inclement weather.
