Valmalenco, Italy - The second to last stop of the 2010 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup tour will take this weekend in Italy. As happened in both 2008 and 2009, Valmalenco will once again host decisions in three different disciplines. More than 100 women and 150 men from more than 20 countries are entered in competitions in snowboard cross, parallel giant slalom and halfpipe.

Whistler (BC), Canada - Same as it ever was: in what appears to be the 2010 Olympics revisited, the second downhill training run at the 2010 Paralympics Winter Games in Whistler, originally scheduled for today at 11:30 a.m. local time, was canceled due to fog. There will be another training run tomorrow, weather permitting, starting at 11:30 a.m.

Snowbird, UT - Utah's Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort will be hosting a winter Stargazer event this Saturday. The evening includes a Tram ride with local astronomers for an informative presentation before unloading on Hidden Peak where participants will view the night sky at 11,000 feet through high-powered telescopes.

Tignes, France - Kaitlyn Farrington has competed in the Winter X Games for the past three years, and Thursday night in the women's Snowboard SuperPipe final, she leaves Winter X Games Europe with her first gold medal. In a field of six women, four of whom were Olympians, Farrington and Australia's Torah Bright went head-to-head for the title.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - Canada's Erik Guay kept his stride Thursday, winning his second straight super G to notch the title, the first World Cup globe for a Canadian since 1982 during the Audi FIS World Cup Finals in Germany. Ted Ligety, of Park City, Utah, led for the U.S., finishing 16th.

Tignes, France - Last month, Breckenridge resident Eric Willett took home a silver medal from Snowboard Slopestyle at Winter X Games 14 in Aspen. Today in the men's final at the inaugural Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, Willett upgraded and will bring gold back to his hometown in Colorado.

Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany - Germany's Maria Riesch finished third during the giant slalom at the Audi FIS World Cup Finals on Thursday, narrowing the gap in the hunt for the overall title to just 165 points. Germany's Kathrin Hoelzl was able to lock up the women's GS title, finishing second in the race behind Tina Maze of Slovenia. Current World Cup overall leader Lindsey Vonn, of Vail, Colo., crashed off the course in her first run.

Park City, UT - The Winter Sports School in Park City saw seven alumni compete at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, and three of them brought home medals. Steve Holcomb (class of '97) won gold in the four-man bobsled; Julia Mancuso ('00) won two silver medals in alpine ski racing; and Andrew Weibrecht ('03) brought home bronze, also in alpine racing. The college prep school's alumni Olympic medal count is now six, including Ted Ligety's gold medal in Alpine Combined at the 2006 Torino Winter Games, and Mancuso's gold in Giant Slalom also in Torino.

Kirkwood, CA - As the wind whistled over the razor-sharp rock spires of the Cirque at California's Kirkwood ski area, skiers readied their gear and nerves for the fifth stop of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour. This is one of the most respected steep skiing contests in the world and the venue at Kirkwood Mountain Resort has become notorious due to its steep, technical slopes and because it is permanently closed to the public. This past weekend marked the 13th consecutive year of the competition coming to Kirkwood and it was a true spectacle from which Mad River Glen, Vt.'s Dylan Crossman and Janina Kuzma of New Zealand emerged victorious.
