Silverton, CO - This December is one to remember. Following another 10 inches of new snow fell overnight Sunday night, Colorado's Silverton Mountain ski area is reporting an upper mountain base 110 inches deep thanks to a total of 90 inches of snowfall in the previous week. The only larger storm cycle to hit Silverton Mountain was during the record-setting winter of 2005 that dropped 117 inches in one long storm cycle that lasted 13 days.
Silverton Mountain does not usually reach a 100-inch base until February, making this the deepest base Silverton Mountain has ever had in December. Silverton Mountain is known for having ‘Expert Only’ ski terrain and skiers who love to jump of cliffs and ski tight chutes. With the fantastic base skiers right now are jumping off 30-foot high cliffs, and skiing steep 50-degree chutes that normally are not skiable until late in the season.
