According to S/Sgt. Steve LeClair of the Whistler Pemberton RCMP, the unidentified man was skiing in an area that was open to the public when he left the skied portion of the run, hit some large rocks and was severely injured. The incident was reported at 2:51 p.m., and ski patrol and two mountain doctors attended and attempted to resuscitate the skier who nonetheless succumbed to his injuries. This occurred on the upper Dave Murray Downhill run, an area that is open to the public. The area had been posted with signs warning of unmarked rocks and obstacles due to early season conditions.
Police are continuing their investigation and are in the process of interviewing witnesses to the incident. The family of the man has been notified and his name is not being released at this time.
