The region was receiving copious amounts of warm rain at the time, saturating the snow pack. The ski area and neighboring I-90 were both closed when the slide occurred at approximately 11:40 a.m.

One of the homes on Chamonix Place struck by the slide was knocked off its foundation, causing severe damage. Two people inside were treated for minor injuries. One tower of the Kelchelus chairlift was knocked over.

It's believed that a landslide triggered the avalanche, and not the other way around.

There is no word on when Summit East, formerly known as Hyak Ski Area, may reopen.
