“Canada Olympic Park has a special place in Freestyle history,” said Canadian Freestyle Ski Association CEO Peter Judge. “It was the host venue for the introduction of Freestyle into the Olympic Winter Games in 1988. The crowd that covered the hill on the day of Aerials is legendary. And the fact that Canada won two medals that day makes it even more memorable.”
During those 1988 Olympic Winter Games in Calgary, Jean-Marc Rozon won gold and Lloyd Langlois won bronze.
Two FIS World Cups were held on the sites – in 1989 and 1990 – before the event moved to Blackcomb Mountain in 1991. Last year, the World Cup was held on the 2010 Olympic sites at Cypress Mountain in West Vancouver, B.C. The Canada Post Freestyle Grand Prix comes back to Calgary Jan. 8-10, 2010
“In a way we’ve come full circle” Judge continued, “The World Cup in January will be a critical qualification event for the 2010 Winter Olympics and the only one in Canada. Winsport has built great permanent sites for both moguls and aerials – it’s going to be a great show and we hope the public will come out to cheer on our team and show them the great support they will feel during the Games.”
The best Freestyle athletes from more than 20 countries will be competing in two mogul and one aerial competition. Mogul finals will be held under the lights on Friday and Saturday night, with the high flying aerialists competing in their finals on Sunday afternoon.
