Mt. Hood, OR - Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort officials say they expect to open the Oregon resort next week, most likely Wednesday. As of press time last night the resort had received 21 inches of snow since Friday and the powerful storm continued to rage, dropping two inches of snow per hour.

Resort officials are confident that with this snowfall and the forecast for more accumulations and colder weather through the weekend that they’ll be able to open the resort for at least a limited opening next week.

Resort Executive Director of Communications Dave Tragethon says this is the perfect storm for an early opening.

“This storm should give us enough of a snowpack to groom it into a quality experience, and the forecast looks like we’re going to be able to sustain it," Tragethon said. "We’re excited about getting this season open early for our guests.”

The number of lifts and trails, as well as confirming an opening day will be announced as the storm develops.

Further north, Mt. Baker near Bellingham, Wash. is also considering an early opening.

"The storm hit us hard Friday and Friday night, bringing even more snow than anticipated," the ski area reported on its website. "General Manager Duncan Howat reported thigh-deep snow on Mitzi's (he's about 6'2"), and it's looking like a winter wonderland."

The freezing level is predicted to rise a bit through Monday morning, then come back down to 2,500 feet and remain low for the rest of the week. Clearing is forecast Wednesday through Friday, then another good storm cycle for next weekend with more snow.

"It looks good for a possible opening toward the end of next week," the snow report continued. "We will see what happens with freezing levels and precipitation Sunday and Monday, then reassess the updated forecast. We will announce on Monday if there's a possible opening date middle to end of next week or early the following week - the opening date could be earlier or later, depending on snowfall and updated forecast."
