Tahoe City, CA - With summer upon us, it's the perfect time to head up to visit your favorite ski resorts surrounding Lake Tahoe in the off-season to enjoy cool breezes and some special Independence Day weekend festivities.


Things get underway today as Incline Village, at the base of Diamond Peak ski area on the Nevada side of the lake pulls out all the stops with a multi-day celebration through Saturday, July 4, called Red, White and Tahoe Blue. Special events include parade, dress-up-doggie contest, opening ceremonies, ice cream social, patriotic chalk drawing contest and rubber ducky race. The festivities culminate with Fourth of July Fireworks at 9:30 p.m. Saturday night at Incline Beach.

Fireworks also get under way at Kings Beach Friday, July 3. The show starts at 9:30 p.m. and can be best seen from the Kings Beach State Recreation Area.

The Village at Squaw Valley USA hosts new releases and summer classics as part of their Summer Movie Series Thursday, July 2 at 8:30 p.m. Flicks are shown in the plaza on the big screen under the stars.

The holiday weekend starts on Friday, July 3 at the Village at Northstar in Truckee with an Arts & Crafts Festival showcasing more than 60 artists’ work at the base of the ski resort, and continues that night with an outdoor showing of the movie Little Giants.

Tahoe City’s 63rd annual fireworks celebration begins at 9:30 p.m. at Commons Beach Saturday, July 4. Prime viewing spots are from the beach, where family picnics are popular, as well as various locations throughout town along North Lake Boulevard.

It’s an old-fashioned July Fourth Holiday Celebration in Truckee Saturday, July 4 with a morning Truckee Firecracker Mile fun run and walk for all ages followed by a 10 a.m. hometown parade in historical downtown, featuring the Wells Fargo six-horse-drawn stagecoach. The party continues with Red, White and TOCCATA Tahoe Blue, The Orchestra and Community Choral Artists of the Tahoe Area, which is kicking off its Big Blue MusicFest with a celebration of American composers. The performance is scheduled for 5 p.m. at the Squaw Valley Chapel in Olympic Valley Sunday, July 5 and will feature spirituals, Broadway, pop and folk tunes.

At the southern end of the lake, "Star Spangled Fourth - Lights on the Lake", which is billed as the largest synchronized fireworks display west of the Mississippi, celebrates July 4th above the water near the base of Heavenly Resort in South Lake Tahoe. The Lake Tahoe Festival of Fine Arts runs Friday through Sunday in South Lake Tahoe as well.
