Park City, UT - The Winter Sports School in Park City saw seven alumni compete at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games in Vancouver, and three of them brought home medals. Steve Holcomb (class of '97) won gold in the four-man bobsled; Julia Mancuso ('00) won two silver medals in alpine ski racing; and Andrew Weibrecht ('03) brought home bronze, also in alpine racing. The college prep school's alumni Olympic medal count is now six, including Ted Ligety's gold medal in Alpine Combined at the 2006 Torino Winter Games, and Mancuso's gold in Giant Slalom also in Torino.

“There’s a reason the Winter Sports School alumni saw the success they did in Vancouver,” said Rob Clayton, head of school, The Winter Sports School. “Our student athletes receive a first-class college preparatory education and the flexibility they need to achieve their best academically and athletically. For over 15 years, our students and alumni have demonstrated success in the classroom and on the ice, track, snow or pipe, and we’re very proud and honored to have played a role in their development and achievements.”

The objective at the Winter Sports School is to prepare elite winter sports student athletes for continued academic success in college with unique education programming that also encourages them to train and compete at the highest level all winter long. The full-year academic calendar runs from mid-April to mid-November, leaving students free to train in their sport of choice during the winter. Over ninety percent of Winter Sports School students attend college after graduation – most at NCAA member schools with a strong presence in winter sports - and go on to compete nationally and internationally.

Continued Clayton, “Too often, we hear about student athletes who try to simply rack up enough online credits to graduate from High School and mark it off their to-do list. Here at the Winter Sports School, we’re focused on intellectual growth and academic excellence. We’re matriculating elite, dedicated athletes, and we’re graduating academically prepared students. Last year, two national merit scholars graduated, and one of our snowboarders went on to Stanford.”
