Amid new state laws and calls from the public and some politicians to charge "irresponsible" parties for rescue, there's a lot of misconception and unfortunate side effects:

Sidebar: I'm not shilling for the AAC, but it would appear that many backcountry users aren't aware that membership in the American Alpine Club provides you with a significant bit of rescue insurance in the event that you are billed for some part of your rescue. They also offer various other discounted insurance programs.
