Subtle FTO Forum Bug

Postby Marc_C » Sat Dec 07, 2013 6:53 pm

Some folks have mentioned from time to time in the past that they've lost a post that they just wrote after hitting the submit button. Admin and others have been unable to reproduce the problem. I think I've finally found the STR for this exceedingly elusive bug as it has now happened to me at least twice in recent memory.

Basically, it appears to be a session collision when two people are posting at (nearly) the same time. If two posters hit the submit button quasi-simultaneously, one of them is going to win and the other post is going to vanish. It looks an awful lot like a multitasking race condition, and there's probably only a few millisecond window when it will occur, hence the difficulty to reproduce the problem.

Interesting. I'll look into it further with the forum developers. Thanks!
