Season 2014-2015 Plans

I've not posted much on here in a long time and if I have missed a similar thread then apologies!

Anyway, thought I would start a thread on plans for the coming season. Anyone got anything nailed yet? Next year is a *coughs* large *coughs* birthday so with friends planning weekends away I decided I'd rather spend it on snow and with good friends. This year is my "free" year on my 2 year season pass at Discovery and I already have my Big Sky "Sky Card" bought for $69 that allows me free skiing from April 13th til 19th 2015. Great deal and I wont listen to Tony telling me how bad it will be, the last 2 years it has been superb value for great spring skiing! You pays your dollar and you takes your chance \:D/

I'm sure most of you that know of me know whats coming but here goes, and there is room to change as I now book nothing in advance other than my first nights motel.

Thursday March 12th - Leave Aberdeen 6am and arrive in Bozeman 9.30pm
Friday March 13th - Drive to Philipsburg, pick up ski gear and head to Discovery
....
Saturday March 14th til Sunday April 5th - I will be skiing Discovery and staying with friends in Philipsburg with potential for day trips around the state, lots of beer drinking, shooting, pool etc etc
....
Monday April 6th til Sunday April 12th - I will probably be heading over to Mt Bachelor to see a friend who is likely to be working as an instructor up there this winter and hopefully get a good deal on a pass that I noticed they had on offer last winter
....
Monday April 13th til Friday April 17th - I will probably base myself in Bozeman for the week as I like it there and ski the week
....
Saturday April 18th til Tuesday April 22nd - Stay with friends in Philipsburg and do some wild things no doubt! I fly home at 1pm on Tuesday April 22nd, arrive home 12pm on the Wednesday and will be at my desk at work 7am on Thursday 23rd April

My boss does not know this yet but that is not my problem!

Your timing at Bachelor is often right in the sweet spot. The best lift served corn of my life was probably April 7-9, 2000. My only 50K vertical day lifetime was April 7, 2012. viewtopic.php?t=10186 I'm not sure when Bachelor's spring pass goes on sale, but last year it cost slightly less than 3 single day tickets.

Big Sky and Moonlight being combined helps the late season there a lot, as most of Moonlight is north facing vs. little of the remainder of Big Sky. It's now easier to follow the sun around to the optimal exposures.

After looking at some of the 73 pages(!) of the twochordcool thread referenced in Tony's link.....
I ask Admin to *please* reach out to TCC and get him to join the forum here! It will be priceless!
I mean, who here would write: "Trust me when I tell you that I find many people far more annoying than they find me."

I always said that I will take our low signal-to-noise ratio over higher volume any day of the week!

Ready, willing and only a little less able. Local pass with Big Sky card, trucks got new exhaust, brakes, drive belt and tires.
Always ready for local pow, this year maybe Utah and Co. Almost a foot of new snow @ 6800'.
Get out and VOTE.

Admin, not planning on Utah but certainly not ruling it out come April if conditions dictate but I would think now it is unlikely.

lono, I see that Big Mountain is extending its season by a week from the usual 1st Sunday of April closing. If I had not been planning on mt Bachelor I'd have been up in Whitefish for sure.

q, Thanks for news, I had no clue we're open till April 12. Good news all around. April weather swings hard both ways here,
so we got that going for us.

Whitefish is over half south-facing and not all that high. You would be crazy to choose it over Bachelor for the first week of April. Also, Hellroaring Basin will likely close at its usual time as it's grizzly bear habitat in spring.

Yeah, I was surprised when I read it on their site. I thought there was an opportunity somewhere in the state to open a week longer than usual now that Big Sky have etended up til the 3rd Sunday these last 2 seasons. Pity it wasnt Discovery for me but they have to close on the first Sunday and despite annual rumours I'm told this is set in stone.

Tony, I'd never rule out Big Mountain in early April, I've had some great days in years gone by. You takes your chances.

My comment was at least as much based upon the positive for Mt. Bachelor in April, as reflected by my initial enthusiastic comments when you mentioned you were going there.

I'm sure that Discovery doesn't have a prayer of attracting enough business in April to pay the bills of staying open. On another Forum I suggested Discovery should be on the list of Top Ten least crowded resorts in North America with interesting terrain. I have not been there but have read enough TR's from q and others to believe this is true.

I'd say that they must struggle to pay the bills on almost any given midweek day that I have ever been there from mid March til mid April. I can only go with anecdotal evidence from staff there that say the weekends from mid March onwards tail off quite a bit.

For me the beauty of Discovery is that it is a mom and pop hill that has somehow managed to tag unbelievably good terrain onto the backside that 90% of the mom and pops don't want to ski. That for me means that in the busiest weekends with good snow conditions the parking lot and lodge might be busy but once I am in my playground I have the place to myself and another 20 people. Midweek, i've got to the bottom of the lift almost an hour into the day and been the first customer, one day last year I was the only person skiing it for 2 hours in the morning. It is that kind of place.

I have often thought about posting this as a question on a thread of its own.

If you had to ski 1 chair for the rest of your days and the terrain from it, which resort and which chair would it be. For me it would be Limelight at Discovery without any question.

My daughter and I , who is spending her junior year in Spain, will be spending Xmas week in Morzine. Jamesdeluxe's TR helped me make my decision. The choices were Portes du Soleil or Lech. Cost wise it's a no brainier.

I know the Alps can be a crap shoot and a sh!t show this early in the season. Due to our schedule this is the only opportunity for us to ski together this winter..
