Anyone know a rule of thumb for elevation vs. precipitation?

I know temperature generally declines with elevation of a ratio approximately -- 1000 ft gain: 3-5F decline in temp.

Is there some rule of thumb or standard ratio for precipitation?

Like for every 1000 ft gain: 10% more precip or something.

Larry Schick believes that maximum precipitation occurs with about 7,000 feet of orographic uplift. He's looking at this from the PNW perspective. On Mt. Rainier max snow is between 5,000 and 10,000.

In the Rockies the Great Basin is 4,000+. So in Utah and Colorado that might put max snow at 11,000. Seems reasonable.
