Anyone else see this today? The headline says "mandatory", but the text says "recommend".

Major Ski Resorts to Make Helmets Mandatory

Thursday, October 01, 2009

Six months after actress Natasha Richardson died following a fall at the Mount Tremblant ski resort in Quebec, the company that operates the facility has announced helmet requirements at its North American resorts.

Vancouver-based Intrawest said Thursday it will recommend all skiers and snowboarders wear helmets when the ski season begins in a few weeks.

Richardson, the 45-year-old wife of actor Liam Neeson, died in March after falling during a skiing lesson and suffering a head injury at Mount Tremblant.

Intrawest operates nine ski resorts including Mount Tremblant in Quebec, Panorama Mountain near Invermere, British Columbia, and Whistler Blackcomb, which will host alpine events for the 2010 Winter Games.

Mandatory only for children's ski school. We're working that story, too. Their headline is misleading.

I'm not sure if it should be mandatory for all, however, if it made insurance cost less, and therefore mad my lift ticket cheaper, I'm all for it.

Rob, If it lowered their insurance cost, I think they would probably just pocket the profits.

It's from Faux Propaganda, uh, "News" - what do you expect? Accuracy? (What the hell is the strike-out BBcode?)

At the very least, the ski instructors should be required to wear them. It is amazing how many instructors do not wear helmets. It doesn't seem to matter where....CO, UT, BC, or MI. My kids always say..."if you don't wear a helmet, you must not have much to protect."

The ski helmet companies have done an excellent job of marketing their product and should be a case study for other companies to follow.

Agreed. While i'm all for skiers wearing helmets I think that requiring them is ridiculous. At the most the requirement should be limited to beginner slopes

"Has skiing just become as dangerous as the streets of Kabul. Coming up on the 10 o'clock news." :bs:

or

"Obama makes ski helmets a manditory public option and will give all profits from helmet sales to ACORN. Get the full story at 10 o'clock tonight on Fox News." :rotfl:

I don't disagree with this comment.

Not even limited to beginner slopes. Terrain parks is the only place where the mandatory thing makes sense, elsewhere...it's up to you.

Here is a clip from Andrew Mclean:

Helmets are for Pussies

Tree skiing sans helmet. Not trees, skulls or kittens were harmed in making this movie.

Helmet use should always be a personal choice.

How does advocating requiring helmet use make one a socialist? I thought socialism was an economic theory?

Hey you started it.
