Is the intent to show how resort sites have kept up with changes and improvements with interweb technology or is there a deeper point?

Those ones from 1996 are brutal. Which software was developed between that year and 1999?

HTML 2.0 followed by HTML 3.2 and CSS 1, with HTML 3.x having the greatest impact in that timeframe.
