WF 1/10/10

Sorry about not posting last night, I don't have internet on 87. Yesterday was a more typical Whiteface Day. It was really cold, I think -3 when I left the hotel at 9:00. When I got there it was pretty crowded, WF was having it's $35 sunday special. It's a pretty good deal, except yesterday the Gondola broke down during the morning. This meant that the crowds were relegated to use Wf's fairly exposed lift system. One must also remember that the only high speed lift is the Valley express.

Although it was colder saturday, sunday was far more unpleasant as the wind whipped up something awful. That combine with the long lift lines and I was freezing. After 4 runs I had to go down and just warm up to an early lunch/beer. While eating lunch the workers at WF got the gondola up and running so that changed the outlook for the afternoon.

As with any typical Whiteface day in January, when the wind picks up one must hit the trees. So, I headed into the trees off of Upper Mackenzie

I would have hit it, off of empire, but empire was closed due to lack of coverage (State budgetary issues methinks). The snow on Mackenzie was nice, so I kept hitting it and then ducking into the trees at various points.

And finally I went to the bottom of Mackenzie for my obligatory bump run to make sure my upper body is nice and quiet.

The general snow conditions today were ok. As always once the wind hits, it tends to blow the snow off into the trees. In the trees the snow was pretty darn good. There were even moments of 4 to 5 inches of PDR. I do, however, think it's a bit of a joke that the website has PP listed as it's primary condition and PDR as it's secondary. It should be have been ICE as it's primary and PP as it's secondary. Or rather PP on the left sides of trails and GET YOUR SKIS TUNED IF YOU WANT TO SKI ON THE RIGHT SIDE OF THE TRAILS as it's secondary.

Amazing how you got both 'sides' of WF in the same weekend. That place is either spectacularly good, or downright awful - conditions wise anyway. Glad to see you got at least one day of the good, though. Far too many of my trips up there ended up in the awful conditions category for the entire weekend.

That's why the offhill stuff is so important to Lake Placid/WF's value proposition.

Does that look like a seeded bump run? (Oh joe .....)

Seems like Mac always has nicely formed bumps on it and they dedicate that trail to bumps. I like it.

Thought it's called "Face Lift?"
 Yes, it most definitely is. I just think of it as the valley express. To be honest, I hadn't taken it since they built the gondola.

It wasn't a seeded run, it was just particularly good looking mogul field. I must say, it is much easier to quickly do bumps when the moguls have a regular shape to them. It's also nice because the moguls scare off the bad snowboarders. At WF you see way too many snowboarders that go down Wilderness or Mountain Run and never turn. They just scrape all the snow off the mountain while they keep their boards perpendicular to the fall line. Meanwhile, most of the skiers there really know how to carve. I think there is a real racing culture there.

BTW, there was this one boarder who was rocking a serious carve. It was really awesome to watch, and looked amazingly fun.

I was watching someone at Belleayre doing the same thing: really tight-radius carves... it's beautiful to see.
