Edelweiss QC : Friday March 16, 2012 – Going Fast

I agree , the wheels have fallen off this season . Great skiing if it was late April but mid March . You gotta be kidding !!! Temps in the Laurentains + 23 C in the shade if you can believe it . Snow not even corn as temps above freezing on continuous 24 hour cycles so without a freeze /thaw cycle you get the mush where you just sink in on natural snow trails . Maclean's Magazine Cover Story this week is the end of Winter in Canada . Sensational - yes but always some truth .

the end of Winter in Canada
Not in Western Canada. A merely above average season has become epic for the past month. Lake Louise and Sunshine might set record highs this year.

Much of Canada's geographical territory has been above average all year again (I don't know the specific temps the Banff area, but again snow received isn't the only indicator (See winter 2008).

Temps above from +20c / +26c range this week for 5 days. Overnight low are at around +10/+16c for this period. Today (and yesterday and probably tomorrow) temps totally scattered the previous record high (from 2010) by +10c. The record highs are at around +15c for this week. So we might have an overnight Low that is higher than a registered record High for one day this week.

Here is the forecast for Ottawa:
Tonight
Clear. Fog patches developing near midnight. Low 9.

Tuesday
Sunny. Becoming a mix of sun and cloud in the morning. Fog patches dissipating in the morning. High 25. UV index 4 or moderate.
Tuesday night
Clear. Low 12.
Wednesday
Cloudy. High 26.
Thursday
A mix of sun and cloud. Low 15. High 26.
Friday
A mix of sun and cloud with 30 percent chance of showers. Low 9. High 16.
Saturday
Cloudy with 60 percent chance of showers. Low plus 2. High 10.
Sunday
A mix of sun and cloud with 60 percent chance of showers. Low plus 2. High 11.

Yesterday
Max:
25.1°C
Min:
0.8°C

Normals
Max:
4°C
Min:
-7°C

Record for this day:
Highest Temperature 16.0°C 2010
Lowest Temperature -20.6°C 1949
Greatest Snowfall 13.2cm 1998
Most Snow on the Ground 107.0cm 1993

We have no snow, no snow what so ever on the ground (which we generally have this time of the year). People were walking on short sleeve t-shirt today.

So temps are somewhere around +20c above normal (Max and Min). Not good, not good at all. Not good for ski areas. Not good for the Maple syrop industry (the season is almost over before it even started). The ski season (in general) in the East are getting shorter and shorter. From a November to April in the majority of ski areas in Quebec 20-30 years ago most season, now we are looking at mid-December to late March for the same ski areas. Vorlage closed for the season on Sunday. Edelweiss is closed midweek, not sure how many weekends they'll open. One last one, maybe two at the most?
