Sugarbush 12/26/12 - Hordeless

The complete absence of any sort of horde, whether thundering or not, was the defining characteristic of the conditions at Sugarbush, today, December 26. With my six-year-old daughter and 73-year-old Dad in tow, we skied popular cruisers all day long. There was room to roam on all trails even in some of the more notorious crowd funnels (i.e., Downspout). Lifts all over the mountain were ski-on all day long. There was no competition for a lunch table at noon. The parking lots were half full, at best.

The snow was decent too, with wall-to-wall coverage, mostly packed powder, with lesser parts bullet-proof and some left-over fluff. The weather was nice with temps in the 20s, a light breeze from the South, and dramatic, high overcast, that looked like impending snow, but allowed for views from the 'Daks to the Whites.

IMO, Sugarbush cheated today on their Mountain and Snow Report by reporting 111/111 open trails. This was technically true, but they weren’t spinning Castlerock, requiring hiking from the top of Heaven’s Gate to ski any of the Castlerock trails.

Looking forward to the storm which is forecast to start tonight and end Friday morning, leaving upwards of 15 inches.
