Mont Alta's bad luck - Fire

I was shock to find out that Mont Alta was hit by a fire overnight. The fire destroyed the building that housed the patrol, rental, etc. The electrical board for the lift was also located there.

After a great weekend of skiing in the Laurentians and at Mont Alta, the future is uncertain more than ever.

There is no insurance money involved as that building wasn't insured. From what I heard the electrical wiring had been replaced recently. Police is investigating.

Wishing all the ones involved good luck and courage whatever decision they will make.

This news is worse than devastating after all that has happened. We just had a amazing powder weekend where we just skied anywhere all day long. Received a call early this morning with the news ,could not believe it. Went thru so much just to open and get the lift approved. The hill has to survive . Fire is under investigation.http://fr.canoe.ca/infos/societe/archiv ... 83813.html Take a look at this picture. Hard to take.

Ominous parallel to Kratka Ridge, where I just hiked last weekend.

I suspect Mont Alta and Kratka are rather similar in scale and topography, probably average snowfall too. Of course the Montreal and L.A. ski markets are different, and we can hope that's a point in Mont Alta's favor.

They're not opening this season -- a press release yesterday said that so much work is needed on the infrastructure that they're pushing the reopening back to next December. In a nutshell, they want to do things right instead of in a hurry so that the ski area is in operation long-term.
