Yea, it WAS a good start to the December ski season in the Northeast (November was pretty much a wash out, with above-normal temps) with a few cold shots in the last couple of weeks, allowing most ski areas to crank up their snowmaking and with some smaller snow storms to add some natural snow to the mix. We got 6 to 7 inches of light powder Friday night into Saturday morning. BUT today (Sunday), it is close to 50 degrees with heavy rain throughout almost all of the Northeast, washing away most of the natural snow and some of the manmade stuff too. I don't think it will be a total wipeout of the early season but it definitely hurts. It is supposed to turn seasonably colder this week, allowing snowmaking to resume, so the X-mas week may be OK (unlike last year where it was total wipeout of the holiday season at most NE ski areas.

My mid-month report Friday shows a way above start in the East, particularly in the Vermont snowbelt. http://bestsnow.net/seas17.htm

Jay 64% open, Stowe 85% open, Sugarbush 100% (yes, I know they are the most aggressive about opening at low tide, but still...), Killington 59%. These are all 75th+ percentile numbers for mid-December.

And Mad River Glen closed today to allow the mountain to drain.

That's why people like James need to seize the day when it's good. You never know when the next NCP event is coming.
