Due to our move to new servers, the date and time attributed to this post is incorrect.)

In my eternal quest to document and/or ski every ski area in New England, I embarked on another recon trip on Wednesday. First stop was Sunrise Ski Slope in N. Attleboro. Initially I had thought that it was a semi-abandoned rope tow area, but I was suprised.

Turns out that the area sports a J-bar and a decent low intermediate trail. The area has been closed for a few years. Sledders had packed the trail down fairly well, and since I had my skis with me, I figured "why not take a few runs?"

The actual descent wasn't much...maybe 100-150 vertical, but not bad. The trail was in excellent shape, even though the base was less than 4 inches (thanks to the sledders who packed it down). Upon reaching the bottom I skied past some sledders who looked completely shocked seeing a skier come down the slope!

I hiked back up the steep J-bar (in very good shape) and made one more run.

I recommend this area for those who want to try to sample backcountry (of course this pales in comparison to other places) without geting in over your head. To reach the area, Take Rt 1 south from Rte 95 (Walpole exit) and follow to N. Attleboro. You will pass a Dairy Queen on your left, take Elmwood street which is immediately left of that. Take Elmwood up the road and a WWII memorial park is on the right, enter the gate through the park. Drive clockwise around the park and the area will be on your right.

A full story with pictures will appear on my website next week, or perhaps earlier.

www.nelsap.org

Hey,
This one is quite a story.I also like this story and Thanks to The Colorado Skier who first questioned this area, a search began for information. This area looked lost...definitely not open, except for an occasional sledder. Pictures from this trip are found.
