THE PERFECT STORM

well i'm sure it's obvious to most by now that i'd rather be in the east at anytime than anywhere else which is why i choose to live here. now sometimes i do feel the need for some scenery and slope diversification so off to foofyland or interior or coastal b.c. i go, foofyland, january and b.c. april or may for snow other reasons than weather and snow surface likeities, like that word? i just made it up.
now, why do i think this storm of the wet variety is so great for ec skiing.
1/ with all of this rain, joey and the like will think that this season is over and won't come up anymore or as often-less crowded surfaces.
2/ with the snowpack that we have this rain may put a dent but, not hurt the snow up high badly enough to cause much concern, especially with some potentially snowy months ahead.
3/110 inches at the loaf last april
4/100 inches on mount washington may 97'
5/a big one/since we had such a great early season, even most dedicated skiers have had enough skiing and this rain could seal the deal in getting their bikes and golf clubs out in short order and early-less crowded exotic spots .
those are some of my thoughts on this PERFECT STORM.
skiing's still hangin in here on the seacoast as i took charliedog on a fabulous morning corn tour this morning with some beautious turns thrown in just for the feel of it all.

Rog - some other coasters may have some snappy remarks on this and that. But, this is why, I wouldn't be surprised, if you live a real long time. Enjoy it as it comes....it's all good.

Snowing like crazy in Quebec , can't even make it out of my city house to make it up to the Laurentians so took some runs in the back yard while I wait out the storm. Could be 2 feet when its over !

I just got on the computer, what a day. I don't think I have ever seen something like it. I had in from my garage this morning (maybe 20cm) then back in town at 7pm and reshovel (maybe another 20cm). CRAZY!!!!

I don't know where to put the snow, snowbanks are so high.

I just have the 1971 storm in my head (I was 5 3/4 back then).

From CBC News:
Central Canada blanketed as 'mammoth' storm sweeps eastward

From CBC Ottawa:
Massive snowfall descends on Ottawa

Fifteen centimetres of snow fell overnight in the region, but the major pummelling of up to 35 cm began Saturday afternoon and lasted into the evening. Wednesday's storm unleashed 28 cm of white powder on the Ottawa area.

Skied local powder Wednesday, today and planning to go tomorrow. Spring Break in NH is going to have to wait. :P

Winter storm warning for
Ottawa North - Kanata - Orléans continued

..Major winter storm affecting southern Ontario overnight..

This is a warning that dangerous winter weather conditions are imminent or occurring in these regions. Monitor weather conditions..Listen for updated statements.

The winter storm which is affecting most of southern Ontario is now centred over northern Vermont. This storm will continue to track northwards into Québec overnight giving significant snow amounts to eastern Ontario. The first shot of snow began Friday morning over areas north of the lower Great Lakes and last evening across eastern Ontario and ski country. The second round of heavy snowfall associated with this storm began this morning. The heavy snow will gradually taper off from west to east overnight.

Storm totals will likely be near 25 centimetres along and east of a line from London to lake Simcoe then to Petawawa. 40 to 50 centimetres of snow have already been reported over the Niagara Peninsula and portions of eastern Ontario including Ottawa by 11 PM. Eastern Ontario will see an additional 15 to 25 centimetres tonight. Areas west of the London to Petawawa line should see between 10 and 20 centimetres with lesser amounts near Lake Huron and Georgian Bay. Regions located near the St Lawrence Valley could see ice pellets mixed with the snow overnight.

Strong northerly winds with gusts up to 70 km/h are accompanying this storm. The strong winds combined with fresh snow is causing blowing snow and whiteout conditions thereby creating dangerous driving conditions. The winds will slowly diminish in strength overnight.

Ontario provincial police in the upper Ottawa Valley and Northumberland have resorted to snowmobiles for transportation. Travellers should be prepared to change their plans accordingly.

Please refer to the latest awcn11 cwto bulletin for snow amounts as of 11 PM.

Environment Canada will continue to monitor the situation to update watches and warnings as required.

WHAT A STORM...

Crazy , can't make it out of the house , might try later. No plows in sight.

It's official...Ottawa received 49cm.

Crazy...

Crazy, there are snowdrifts of a few feet from my house to the garage. Helps when it's real windy, a narrow path that I did last night and 4-5 feet of snow in the rest of the yard. There about 2 ft up against the kitchen (back) door.

Going to try to leave in a few minutes and try make it to Edelweiss.

edit: I meant to put the word "try" this morning. Yes, I made it, but it was not easy.

Day 40: Chaos, Why, Good.

Here's a quick summary before I leave.

CHAOS...CHAOS...CHAOS

City received (official number vary) 52 or 56cm of snow from this last storm. That's makes it over 80cm with Wednesday storm. Perfect storm indeed. The city has received now up to 407cm this season.

Only 33cm away from the annual snowfall record of 1970-71. LET'S GO FOR THE RECORD!!!

That being said, it took me 2 1/2 hour to get the car out of my garage, out of the laneway and to the street maybe 150ft away. City lane had between 2-3 ft of snow. The side street had been plowed, not my street. Once on the road, the drive took 45 minutes. So I left my house and did a bootpack through the yard to get to my garage at 7:45am and started skiing at 11:15am.

(...)
Today my back is hurting, probably due to a combination of shoveling 2 1/2 hour in the morning, jumping stuff in Tommy's and re-shoveling around the house and to help a car stuck in the lane once I got home.

Kids were having fun in your backyard while I was gone skiing. One powder day per weekend was enough for Morgane.

Our backyard...so much snow. This is central Ottawa, not the Sierra Nevada.

Coming back from my ski day. I parked on a side street as my street wasn't plowed and I wasn't going to try to park in the garage in our lane.

I'm currently walking on the sidewall of our street.

I'm standing next to our kitchen, that isn't our basement window.

I wanted to ski off the roof of the addition (kitchen) of our home today, but we've leaving for Spring Break in New Hampshire.   We should be at Cannon tomorrow, Wildcat on Wednesday then maybe Cranmore and/or Black. Maybe Balsam Wilderness on the drive back to Canada?

BIG-STORMc-080309_0006.jpg

The storm hit Montreal also, but only 30cm versus 50cm for Ottawa. This is my mom's street on March 11th, two days later, on the day of our drive down south where the storm was rain, not snow.

I know some of you might question the sanity of this (going to NH), but it's about a vacation that the kids are looking forward to it. Skiing local or the Laurentians wouldn't be special for them. So if you see a guy with a 10yr or a 5yr with pink poles and a big beard, it's me :P

A couple hours later in New Hampshire, closing in on Cannon and the White Mountains. Definitely less "White" here, but more "Mountain' than back home.
