Finishing in Style - Stowe VT 4/18/09

Having started my ski season at Stowe on the day after Thanksgiving, it was only fitting that I closed out my ski season there as well - particularly since the 350+ inches rec'd this year on Mansfield have resulted in impressive base depths in April, despite a (relative) late season snow drought.

The day was a little overcast, with just a spitting of snow at the very high elevations (3600', perhaps?). The night before was mild enough were the majority of the hill did not seem to go below freezing, so it was cream cheese skiing even before 8 AM, but very enjoyable nonetheless. Lord, Sunrise, Northslope...all the usual classic fall-line groomed trails were in nice shape with plenty of coverage. Good stuff! =D>

I found the limited off-trail terrain I sampled (Nosedive Glades, Christy's glades) to be very "grippy", and not very enjoyable. However, the bumps on trails like Centerline & Hayride were really nice, particularly Hayride, which was a delight to ski. The hill was unusually quiet for a Saturday morning, but I suppose after 3 days of sunny weather in the 50's, the locals largely passed on a day with a 40% chance of showers, and cloudy. I must say, I was impressed with how much snow was still in the surrounding, north-facing hills (the ones you view while skiing Ridgeview). The snowpack north of I-89 hangs tough, I'll tell you that!

The fog started to roll in thicker when I had to leave around 12:45, but I left quite satisfied with day, and with the season as a whole. :) And with that, I bid adieu to this board until next season. Have a great Summer, everyone!
