Get ready for a Gore/North Creek interconnect

Thanks for the article. It clears up one thing that seemed to be unclear....why does the approved plan show two lifts while every mention of the project refers to the "lift" in the singular. Looks like they are going to do (redo) the skibowl/little gore summit lift first.

It's still not clear if phase one will be finished this year or not. They are saying no, but it seems odd that the lift would be delivered and not installed, or delivered and installed but not used.

The second lift, to me, is insane. It serves no terrain, going from the skibowl base to the existing base. Obviously the point is to make the real estate desirable. But come on. It was originally a HS Gondi, but has been changed to a fixed grip to save money. It would be significantly faster to drive between the bases.

From what I heard the Front Street holdup :-" didn't really delay the project. Only by a week or so. In the first meeting (2 weeks ago?) there was a motion to kill the project unless Front Street threw in additional funds. This is really bizarre as the lift had already been delivered. So if FS wouldn't come up with the cash, we'll just return the lift? North Creek residents and business owners, who aren't as well represented on ORDA as those from Lake Placid, made themselves heard and the project was approved in a special meeting that was called specifically for that purpose.

Looks like I bought my real estate in the right town. This place is happenin.

Scheduled completion is 1999.

Ok maybe not. From what I can tell the ski train isn't dead, but if it's moving forward, it's doing so at a speed that requires time lapse photography to see.

Apparently someone picked a spot for the stop in Warrensburg recently.

That pic I posted was from this:

http://www.firstwilderness.com/masterplan.php

Came across this last night and not sure what to make of it. One thing I've learned from this whole interconnect thing...just cuz somebody posts a pretty pdf don't make it so. If you look into that website (a frustrating compilation of pdfs) ...there are tons of great unfunded ideas.

The Gondi that loads and unloads in town...that's the holy grail for North Creek. That seems like a long shot.

You gotta love "Master Plans." The only people who ultimately profit from them are the architects, engineers, and graphic artists who are paid to create them.

They're kind of like buying a lottery ticket. You have little or no chance of winning, but for five minutes, you get to dream about what may be, and that's their value.

A ski train that could get to North Creek from NYC would be my dream. If one could get there in 4 hours, and buy a pass for the winter with season tickets I would completely do it. It's amazing there hasn't been something like this for the past 20 years.

Rob...unfortunately I've seen estimates of 7.5 hours for the ride. Not too practical. 4-5 hours might be possible with no stops, but I think the train would have to stop multiple times.

I love the idea in reverse. If we moved or retired up there...it would be sweet to be able to get into the city from the mountains without a car. Although if I lived up there... I'd never leave in the winter. [-( :D

Not practical at all.... well it's a pity. It would be nice for you guys to able to come without a car. I think a car in the city is a PITA. However, it's great you don't actually need one. That's why I love the idea of a ski train.

Perhaps there is a bus that goes up there that you could get a winter pass, with lift ticket? I'm really toying around with the idea of renting a small place up there for the winter with a bunch of other people and just heading there every friday night.

Rob...it's all speculation about if it will happen...where it would stop and how long it would take. If you could rent a house and leave your gear....that would be the bomb.

You might want to check out the various rants on the topic at skiadk. There are four current threads relevant to the the train, home rental, convenience, and the interconnect:

It appears I could rent a house right now. My cousin might be moving to the city from San Francisco for work related reasons. He is my main ski partner and we had a little talk about making gore our "home" mountain. The important thing is he would be moving here with his car, which would make the mountains easy to get to. My uncle already has a home about an hour and 10 from gore which we could use as a home base. It's only about 20 minutes from jiminy, but I just can't see myself skiing there too often.

No offense intended, but I can't see why someone of rfarren's skill set (Little Chute???) would want to tie himself to a single second-tier eastern ski area. It's an apples-and-oranges comparison to Harvey44's situation with young children. rfarren is single and can afford to go to Rome every year. Flexibility should be a key part of his equation for eastern skiing. Even more so if he now has access to a car.

Tony, I can get to Rome every year because I go during the summer. I teach in the winter. Every trip I take in the winter eats into my income for the whole year. Skiing is a passion that can cost me a lot more than a few pizzas and bottles of wine. Flexibility is something I can't really afford either. Gore is the best mountain within 3.5 hours of NYC. To travel 5 hours plus to hit stowe and the like isn't worth it (especially considering that Alta is a paltry 7 hours away). Whereas a season pass to 1 mountain that is pretty decent is, at least in terms of cost and time.

While our circumstances are different from Rob's, a lot of this rings true for us.

Skiing is a passion - check
Flexibility is limited - check
Nothing closer than Gore is better- check
Weekly travel to NoVT not realistic- check
Gore is within our budget- check

To get to more consistent skiing ...it's Killington at least (plus 1.5 hours). But lets face it if I'm moving from Gore to get better skiing...I'd probably go to at least to Sugarbush (plus 2.5 hours). Stowe is got to be 3.5 hrs farther and Jay more than that. That's a lot of extra distance/time on a 4-5 hr trip. And rental/real estate is probably cheaper at Gore.

One thing about NoVT vs Gore...odds of a bad year at Gore have got to be way higher than odds of a bad year at Stowe. With real estate that's not such a big deal....there's always next year. With a rental there is more on the line.

Still...Rob...go for it. Would be great to make some turns together next year.

(especially considering that Alta is a paltry 7 hours away)
Once the drive distances reach what harvey and rob say, the above alternative seems more attractive, especially if schedule is not flexible. Even more so if you're single and not a family of 4.

The Little Chute/steep terrain discussion is moved here: viewtopic.php?f=10&t=8014

I put it in the General Discussion because it's not region specific. As Patrick and icelantic's recent expeditions show, there is such terrain in the East, though unfortunately not lift accessible.

does driving up the auto road to the top of some of our steep skiing count? cuz that's how i've been lifted up lately.

You can do Stowe in 5+ hrs from NYC? Impressive. I always allowed about that when I lived in Wallingford, CT (just south of the Hutch/Merritt Parkway & I-91 merge).
