Slow start after a night of ice skating into the new year, with good friends, food and libations on a snowy evening. We had a campfire next to the pond and the blue moon made the sky glow, as it snowed all night. The pond required a lot of maintenance, and rounds of shoveling in the previous 24 hours.

New Years Day started slow with much recovery, aches and pains, but the new-fallen snow was out there in the woods waiting for us.

We opted to go to Virgil because it had been snowing much more there than anywhere else in our area throughout the week with puffs of snow off Lake Ontario. This has really added up and has opened up the woods for skiing.

Our New Years Eve group decided to regroup for a xc tour on the backside of Greek Peak at 1:30. It was snowing quite heavily at this time, and continued to do so for the next few hours. We skied alongside Chair 2 and Chair 4 trails and saw the skiers coming down Marathon, Castor and Pollux.

As we got to the peak of Virgil Mountain I started feeling like I would rather be skiing downhill in all this powder with my phat skis in the trees on the other side of the mountain. At the power line I bid my friends farewell and headed back up the FLT back to Van Donsel Rd.

I drove around to the ski area, which was emptying out. It was still snowing.

Conditions were amazing. Very powdery, and lots of refills and fresh snow on the trails and in the woods. The woods were skiing very well. I squeezed in a few runs before it got too dark.

The lights came on and trails that weren't lit up had been closed. I took a ride up Chair 4 and Zeus was untouched and had plenty of snow on it. It was closed, and really should not have been. I knew it was a bold move, but I felt compelled to try taking a run over there. I decide that it would be ok if this was my last run and went for it. I figured I had a 40% chance of pulling it off and I was definitely taking my chances. So I slipped under the bright orange rope that was across Hercules. I hugged the treeline enjoying the untouched soft powder. Suddenly a snowmobile came up the trail. I was totally busted. I tried to dart into the woods towards Zeus, but he saw me and came right up to me and asked me what I was doing. I told him I was going this way. He said "no your not". I told him that there was plenty of snow and the lights were on it, it should not be closed. But he wasn't ski patrol, so that argument was going to hold no weight. With great disappointment, I skied over to Trojan and back to chair 1, for a few more powdery runs.

It was still snowing when I left Greek Peak at 6pm, quite hungry and tired.

May have to go back for more tomorrow.
