NS Govt Announces World's Toughest Ski Helmet Law

The Nova Scotia Government (eastern Canada) announced new legislation that it will implement the world's toughest mandatory ski helmet law.

At the beginning of the 2012 - 2013 season helmet use will be mandatory for downhill skiers and snowboarders at the provinces three ski areas. People riding and skiing on other private or public property will not be required to wear them.

Although the ski areas will have to post very clear and obvious signage they will not be responsible for enforcement which will apparently fall to the Department of Health & Wellness inspectors.

No compliance fines will cost $250.00 per offence.

It is only a matter of time before this type of legislation trickles across Canada but it probably won't have as much impact in the US except when US skiers visit Canada. Although you will likely see California try to re-introduce the children helmet law that failed to pass last year.

Thoughts?

Comment in today's National Post.

My favorite quote from that article:

"This legislation doesn't ban skiing," says Ms. MacDonald, sounding a bit exasperated.

According to her own logic, and in her own words, I have to ask: Why not?

Why not enact pointless ski helmet law?

Nice editorial =D>

FYI I had to buy a helmet for the Ice Axe cruise. It's a Black Diamond mountaineering helmet not a ski helmet due to my well known heat issues. Ben Mitchell provided such a helmet for me to wear on Shasta. I was never asked to bring the helmet on any of the Antarctic ski tours.
