The condition of the ski trails is not dissimilar to that of the hiking trails this month.

http://tinyurl.com/gnjyk9tThe actual "blob" of SST's did start to fade a little in December, but has cooled much more so in the last week and a half, (likely due to significant upwelling from the recent series of storms), but the remnant high pressure is pretty much still there, which is largely what's steered the storm track further north this winter, before it dives back down to the east/southeast, with the core of the storms missing socal more times than not.

I read that L.A. Times article yesterday too.
I'm still inclined to believe the "Center of the equatorial warm water anomaly being farther west than in 1983 and 1998" explanation. I don't remember when/where that discussion was (maybe OpenSnow), but one of the weather guys mentioned it in passing before the winter.

baldy village looking at west telegraph ,thunder in the clouds.....about the most snow on the mountains for the last couple years
