Aspen Highlands/ Snowmass 1-12/13

Been a long time coming for me to ski Aspen.

When you're new to a place you don't know where to get lunch let alone where to park let alone how not to cliff out.

The skiing over the past few days has been quite pleasant -- creamy lines, very soft, light snow, sun. I hiked the Bowl at Highlands today for the first time and can honestly say it's the toughest hike I've done. Found this old comment board tonight with Tony Crocker chiming in : http://www.epicski.com/t/131188/is-high ... e-skier/90 .

I am getting over a bad cold/cough and I couldn't make it to the very top. I dropped in shortly before the top (the cat was not operating at 10:30 am so had to hike the cat track). When I lived in SLC and skied every weekend, hiking was a breeze, a challenge..in fact even fun. Coming from LA .....different story. I got my a** handed to me.

Nevertheless, the lines at Highland are classic -- long, untracked, a skiers mountain.

Snowmass skied beautifully the last two days -- the upper mountain being mostly closed. Pretty much all tracked up by this afternoon. Sheer Bliss /High Alpine/ and possibly Big Burn were closed I believe on Wed. Thursday morning until about 1 pm afforded many untracked lines of about 6-12" of snow in various places. I was satisfied. Hanging Valley opened today as well as the Cirque t-bar. Snowmass is YUGEEEEEEEEEE!

Aspen is a class mountain but I can say it hasn't won my heart as Alta has.

The upper mountain lifts at Snowmass (Big Burn, Sheer Bliss, Cirque, High Alpine, Elk Camp) were basically all closed Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday. Big Burn was open briefly on Tuesday morning. They were open all-day on Thursday, except for a delayed opening of The Cirque platter lift.

Monday the skiing was terrible because of rain all-day long on the lower mountain. Skiing was outstanding the rest of the week, but the powder was heavy and thick (not typical of Snowmass). Friday in particular I think was the second best day of the entire season.
