Eldora, CO 12-25-17

Our annual family half day on Christmas was excellent this year. We showed up a little after noon
And from midnight till the end of the ski day 15" of snow fell. By afternoon it was a mix of flurries and heavy snow squalls.

Skiing was obviously excellent, crowds were small (we parked in the second row finding an open spot), and patrol opened several areas on all natural snow. There is still a fair bit of terrain that needs to get open, but finally enough to spread people out a bit.

I guess much, but far from all of Colorado can call the recent storms a bit of a Christmas miracle to finally get a decent portion of terrain open. Trail of the day was upper Ambush which has a excellent pitch (officially double diamond) and all on natural snow. Super soft and fun, and probabky scraped off in a couple more days.

Left just at 4p with 12K vert. Happy Holidays everyone.

Christmas week percents of terrain open in Front Range Colorado ass of 12/26 remain at historically low levels comparable to 2011-12. Steamboat and Vail are worse than 2011-12 and the worst in data going back to 1988.

Tony, I certainly believe your data. It is also clear that Steamboat for example at 50% open is a dramatic increase from just one week earlier. I shudder to think of how bad it would be at the Colo resorts without the recent storms and terrain openings. I think Copper went from around 250 acres up to near to 850 acres in one week as a second example. So while still not great Christmas week it's still a bit of a miracle to get those storms.
