Since Wednesday had gotten a little warm on the mountain, I took Thursday off, waiting to see what the Thursday/Friday storm would bring. Taos reported 3 inches Friday morning, although there was probably twice that farther up. It snowed most of the day on Friday as well. Dave, my ski partner on Wednesday, had headed on to Big Sky, so I was solo.

I did 3 runs total in the Wild West Glade trees, accessed by a bootpack above Lift 2. It reminded me of South Bowl at Mount Baldy, although the run in the trees was much longer here at Taos. The snow was decent in the trees. I did a few other runs as well. I wanted to ski the Kachina lift, but missed its brief opening. I noticed that there were areas alongside some of the runs that looked to have good tree skiing, but many were roped off. I asked a couple of Taos employees about that and they gave me vague answers, basically saying that they had their reasons in each case. I talked to a local on the lift and he said that ski patrol did seem to err on the side of caution.

At about 2:00 PM I came to the bottom of Lift 8 only to find it shut down. The liftie told me that there were reports of lightning in the area, so all the lifts were shut down as a precaution. He said that they would resume operation once 30 minutes had transpired without lightning, but I needed to quit early to make my flight out of Albuquerque, so I called it a day. I did hear a fairly loud thunderclap on my way down the mountain.

I enjoyed skiing at Taos, and did not miss the powder-killing crowds I saw at several SLC areas back in January.

Yes the weather lingered at Taos longer than around Santa Fe. Taos conditions on Monday 3/25 were almost identical to Santa Fe on Saturday 3/23: 100% winter snow at the start of the day, with flatter and sun exposed runs softening during the day.
