Copper opened the American Eagle and the Excelerator Saturday under blue skies, while construction crews raced to finish work on a massive new residential-retail development at the base of the lifts.

Surface conditions ranged from sublime, silky packed powder at the top of the mountain to slick hardpack mixed with crumbles of frozen manmade lower down.

Copper open with 10 lifts, 600+ acres and 7 inches of new over a packed surface. Bluebird day. Early season skiing hasn't been this good in Summit County for the past five years.
