I skied Alpental on the last day of 2000, and the word for the day was ice. It was almost like skiing on the east coast, except not as cold. Although fresh snow was falling, there was only enough on the ground to lull you into a false sense of security before you washed out on an ice turn. My edges were not sharp enough, plus the fog and low visibility kept things too interesting. The good news is that Alpental finally opened, but for anyone working on things beyond self-arrest techniques, wait for a few more inches to fall before heading out. Hopefully, the New Year will be kinder to us NW folks.
