05/06/01 Temps ran from 50 up to 65 deg f. Sunny Sunday
of hiking and skiing at Alpental. Took 30 minutes to get to the top
of Sessel chairleft where there were a dozen plus climbers learning
rope techniques on the chair hardware. Took a nice break to
enjoy thier views from a lift chair that was convinently parked
facing downhill. (Thanks lifties) Spend an addition half hour hiking
up the boot track to the middle of lower international and took
another long break. Decided to ski out from there as my wife had
had quite enough character building for today! There had been 4-5
small avys in the bowl, but none were large. Lots of first crosses to
be found on the ride down. Heavy spring snow made for a thigh
burning experience. Carving huge gentle turns was made easier by
staying at a high enough speed that the skis floated up on top. took
out time for a couple of pauses to make it a 20 minute run out.
Will have to work on getting up earlier in the day before the snow
slushes up as much. Counted over 60 cars in the lot and there
were several folks heading all the way up. --TomK
