CMH Kootenay, March 12

Yesterday was a weather shutdown and today was a close call. We had one run in the first area they tried, waited 30+ minutes for fog to lift, and then moved to a different sector for the rest of the day. There was 50cm. new, but the snow level had risen to 4,500 feet. A couple of the pickups were just below that, but 6 of our runs were to the same pickup at 5,100.

We got in 10 runs today, totalling 18,200 vertical, and the quality of tree skiing was excellent. The higher density snow might have been a problem with conventional skis, but needless to say everyone was on fats. CMH provides them as part of their package.

With the tough weather and the down day, this would have been a better week to be cat than heli skiing. On the other hand, when I arrived on Sunday the sheets from the previous week showed a couple of 30,000 vert days. So there is no question (as I found out myself at TLH in 1998) that on a good weather week there would be nothing comparable to heliskiing.
