France Snowfall 06/07

The media made it sound like the Alps weather was more akin to Miami than typical Munich. But this year was not that bad - close to average - at least in the Western Alps. It looks like lower resorts suffered, but most of the worthwhile Euro resorts in the Western Alps are above the 2000 meter mark. However, the Eastern Alps (Austria) looked bad with below normal snow, low elevation and high temps.

I think this shows - wait till later to ski Europe - February. And if you are going to wait till February, might as well avoid the school holidays in the mid/late Feb. March 1st seems about optimal.

Courchevel has the best Internet snowfall records. Probably a good indicator resort for all the Tarentaise resorts (Val d'Isere, Tignes, Les Arcs, Meribel, Val Thorens, etc). And Chamonix/Verbier too.

My impression was that the Alps had a season rather like the East: terrible into January and good from February onwards. The posted numbers unfortuately omit November, which I presume was bone dry this season.

I'm in complete agreement with ChrisC on when to ski the Alps. Do not be suckered by early season "deals." Now (late April) is better than December.
