New Zealand 2011

Despite the moaning about how warm and dry June was, early July snowfall was substantial in many areas and conditions are overall better than when I was in NZ a year ago this week.

Treble Cone reports full operation on a 48 inch base. Word-of-mouth a year ago was that TC was marginal and I was lucky to be in Canterbury instead.

Conditions in Canterbury are the reverse of my experience a year ago, when the base was at its maximum at Mt. Hutt and declined as one moved northwest. This year the farthest NW area Temple Basin (not yet open a year ago) has the deepest base at 83 inches. Broken River and Craigieburn at 57-59 inches have twice as much snow as a year ago. Mt. Hutt at 18 inches has less than half as much.
