Good to hear. Hopefully this Nov and Dec will be a little more like 2005 and not 2006. I have a few extra vacation days burning a hole in my pocket this year. I would really like to get my first day or two in before Christmas. Any thoughts of who in northern lower michigan usually has the most open (once we get a little closer) and best deals pre-christmas.

Weather can change everything, but in the past few years the most northern ski areas had better now and more runs open pre-xmas, nubs nob has the best snowmaking system, boyne mt/highlands both are not far behind.
If I ski at any of those 3 areas, I stay in Petoskey to save a little cash. You can call around or search local hotels in Petoskey (Days-Inn) asking about ski and stay deals that might save you some money.

There is a NEW casino up there in Petoskey, good food, bars, and lots of ways to lose or win some money. All of local hotels have 24 hour shuttle service to the casino.

Also if you don't mind Canadians and our crappy exchange rate with the UStoCAN $, watch blue mt's web site for snow (http://www.bluemountain.ca/). They have a great snow making system, lake affect snows, and 2 government beer stores!
Stay in Collingwood, or Owen Sound to save a little money.

Good info, thanks. I'll look into Petoskey. I know weather is the biggest factor and I won't waste my money on a few runs of man made snow.

I haven't been to Blue Mt before, and I've wanted to check it out, but i agree with your exchange rate comment right now. And I've heard that the weekends are really bad there. Any experience with that?

Weekends do get a little packed up there at blue, if it's coors collage ski week, the lines are insane!! If you are more likely to ski the blacks, those runs are mostly on the far right side of the MT (east I think) and lines are a little less packed over there. They have a lot of high speed lifts at Blue MT so that does help the lines a little. Bottom line, it can be hit or miss depending on snow levels and how many people decided to come up from Toronto that weekend.

If the lake affect snows are blowing hard to the east off Lake Superior and you want to add 1-2hours more drive time, Searcmont resort ( http://www.searchmont.com/ )1/2 hour east of the town of Soo Sault Marie ONT will get you away from the crowds, and a feeling of skiing back in the old days. No big fancy lodge, no walking miles to the base, just a good hard ski mountain with some great blacks and tree skiing off the run 'hard drive.

Word of caution if you go there, if you dry your gloves near the big round open fire place, they use real wood, and ambers (SP?) can fly off and burn your gloves lol but those are the little things that keeps me coming back there. I know a great place to stay 1 mile from the hill (in a renovated old train caboose) let me know I can dig up the info. The northern lights are as bright as ever up there, also a great snowmobile trail is in the area.

I see you are in Toledo, OH- Ever head east to PA (7 springs, blue knob) good ski areas for later season snows.

Oh and I must say this as the big game (OSU vs UofM) is on this weekend, go BLUE!

Not sure if well check out the Midwest Section, you might want to PM Jonny D (from Toronto) for info on Blue Mtn. Blue is the biggest (or more commercialism) ski area in Ontario. It's 2 hour from Toronto.

I've been wanting to try Searchmont for a few years, but i thought they had some problems a few years ago and almost closed and they might have been purchased by the city or a club or something?? Do I have my info right? Have you been up there since that happened? Staying in a train cabose would be pretty cool.

For my money, i would rather ski a less crowded smaller place than large crowded place. And i do stick to the more challenging runs and try to find my own, and I love tree skiing.

I haven't been to anywhere in PA, I'll have to keep them in mind.

And yes, Go Blue!

I did not make it up to searchmont last year, but the year prior to that I did. The place has not changed much over the past 10 years (and that is a good thing IMO)

A quote from searchmont new explains the current owner ship:
“Now that the sale of Searchmont Resort is complete, we should all congratulate ourselves: as present and future users of Our Mountain, we are now proud owners of our very own Resort. Impress your friends and neighbours by saying that! As a community non-profit organization, Searchmont Resort looks forward to Searchmont Resort looks forward to working with stakeholders to move Our Mountain forward
(or up!). It's no secret that operating our Resort has been an uphill climb - this is a reality for many Resorts and ski-hills in smaller communities – but with the continued support of past users and increased support from new
users, we can do it!”

Mountain View Lodge is where you can stay in the train caboose ( http://www.mountainviewlodge.ca/winter.htm ) you are less then 1mile away from the hill.. Pat and Oliver used to run the place (not sure if they still do), and Pat would make some GREAT breakfast and Oliver can tell you all about the local area. He is a avid hunter, so ask to see his black/brown bear skins.

I recall being up there in the early 1990’s and the lake affect snows started off lake superior and did not stop for 5 days, 6-8 feet of freshwater flakes were on the ground. The city had to call in the national guard to help remove snow.

If you make it up there this season, post some pictures and words.
