The Canyons, UT 2/5/10

Day 28: A welcome break.

I squeezed a couple of hours at The Canyons in this afternoon between business appointments. It was a quick whirlwind tour out to Dreamcatcher and back.

It was damp and warm, somewhere in the low to mid-30s. Ungroomed snow was soft but heavy as it seemed to be absorbing the humidity like a sponge.

Upper elevations were socked in, so I stayed below upper mountain lifts like Ninety-Nine 90 to stay out of the soup. I didn't start until 2 p.m., so groomers were already slightly slick in places. It nonetheless made for some fun cruising. In between I headed over to Dreamcatcher for some steep trees on Specter, and rode back up finding that entire sector of the mountain nearly deserted.

Some of the off-piste is still rather sketchy. I made the mistake of returning to Red Pine from Tombstone via Deshutes, which was littered with rocks, stumps, downed trees and other nasties, which made for slow going.

It still beat working for those two hours! (I had to make it up later, but that's just being picky...)
