Mammoth MVP Opens March 19

Tony

I saw the MVP passes went on sale to returning members, with no passholders able to purchase in April. If we're thinking about doing 10ish days there this coming season (and maybe 2 this spring if the snow holds up/snows again), will we find a better day ticket deal?

Mammoth MVP Opens March 19

The weekend/non-holiday rate is $89, so 8 of those are needed to pay for an MVP. Canyon will be open to April 22, so next year's MVP is only good after that. With this year's snowpack it looks to be similar to 2007. They will probably make it to Memorial Day but it will be a close call and this May I would not look at Mammoth as a weekend ski destination but maybe a day of skiing on a trip doing other activities, hiking etc.

I've had MVP since spring 2005 and this will probably be the 3rd season I don't hit the breakeven. But on the good years I exceed it by a lot, topped by 25 days in 2010-11. If 10 days is the max you'll get it's a marginal call to put up the $ now. There are always unforeseen contingencies that can reduce your projected ski days. If you think you'll get 15+ if it's a good year then it's likely worth it.

New Mammoth MVP passholders may use their passes starting Sunday, April 15. I'm suspicious that Mammoth will close Canyon early to save money. In their situation I would do so.

Very unlikely IMHO unless there is an eastern type meltdown. Mammoth has published the April 22 Canyon close for a long time. Mammoth's practice if they are thinking about a cutback is to be silent in the face of clamor, such as people advocating staying open past July 4 last year. Once they have made a commitment they are reluctant to give it up, as anyone who was there skiing the isothermic WROD's Memorial Day 2007 can tell you.

Closing date for Canyon and Eagle has mysteriously disappeared from event calendar. Just saying. All things considered this year, it makes sense to kill it a week early. It's not like the mountain is closing.
