We had seven full days in Banff, but only skied five. We hiked the other two. On Wednesday, April 4, we hiked the ever popular Johnston Canyon trail. It was busy up to Lower Falls, at which point we lost about 75% of the other hikers. Above Upper Falls, we saw no one.

Crampons would have been overkill, but the spikes we brought with us from home were nice to have.

We found some ice climbers on Upper Falls.

It probably topped out at around 25F or so during our hike. It was actually somewhat colder in Banff than it has been in Minneapolis lately, at least until this weekend. It has been a looooooong winter here, however, so we're all pretty acclimated to the cold.

We’re ready for spring at this point. The days are longer and the robins have arrived, but here's what our backyard looked like this morning while we were shoveling 15+ inches of new snow:

It has snowed 3 or 4 inches since then and it’s not supposed to stop until early tomorrow morning.

It is a beautiful canyon and a worthwhile hike. The funny thing is, beautiful river canyons are something we have in abundance in Minnesota:
