Skiing surprisingly nicely.

No big storms have been hitting Colo as of late, but especially the high altitude places (plus Steamboat), have been getting a few inches here and there over the past several weeks which has kept things skiing surprisingly soft in most areas. The wind has been howling too so the usually wind scoured places are more than scoured this year.

So, while far from a great season, compared to much of the west, I'll take it.

Jan 28th was Jr's first ever ski race which luckily was a home race. Windy and cold with a mix of flurries and sun. And despite there being 'delay' gates set each run, Jr made all gates and finished which was the only goal for the first race as a parent. And so weird to be only a parent and not either coaching or running the race itself. Wife and I skied the backside for a bit before each of Jr's race runs. Didn't feel I had the time for laps on the steeps that weekend.

Feb 4th was even better. A few inches for several days in a row left the skiing nicely soft except in wind hammered areas. Temps were quite warm despite the standard Eldora wind. The snow was thicker than normal so the several inches skied like butter and frequently didn't feel like you hit the hard sub-surface. After many laps with my wife in the am on the backside groomers and a few more just after lunch on the front, I was able to manage 5 laps on the steeps: 2 Salto, 2 West Ridge and one Moose glade. Very soft and while thin the only difficult to ski section was really the lower part of Moose in the woods which is crazy thin in many areas. Not sure it should really be open.
