Day 4: Better than Day 3 (though that ain't sayin' much!)

I headed up to The Canyons today for their opening day with Tirolerpeter, who was like a kid on Christmas Morning trying out his new BD Verdicts (not the tool for today, but we'll forgive him...I was stupid enough to ski my Goliaths yesterday) mounted with Silvretta Pures and some Scarpa AT boots. Uploading and downloading was on the Flight Of The Canyons gondola, with the actual skiing served by the Saddleback Express and High Meadow chairs. There was one snow-covered route down: Kokopelli/Pine Draw/The Meadows.

We skied about a half dozen runs by noon, when we decided that we'd had enough. Surfaces were considerably softer than at PCMR yesterday, although it required skiing through guns all day that were sometimes blowing a bit wet. On the plus side it was a gorgeous day to be out in the Wasatch Back, albeit without natural snow on the ground.

Snow, please. Thank you.

Just found this on the UtahSkiWeather.com

I hate to say it, but we're headed for the lowest November snowfall since records have been kept at Alta back in 1945. Right now we're at about 4", the record is 13.5".

I was about to make that comment. I'm not home, but I knew the Alta record was in the 15 range, and that November stands at 5. While we're on the subject, in the 32 years of records at Gothic (between Crested Butte and Aspen) the November record low is 8 inches, and they are currently at 3. Sierra numbers are similar, but we get those kind of months more frequently, like November last year.

I'd have to look it up, but I think we have to go back to 1980-81 or 1976-77 to find all 3 states this dry in November. There is a week left but the forecasts don't show anything happening.
