Greek Peak 1/2/07

Lake effect snow blanketed central NY. I was dressed for work and shovelling 6" of fluff off my walk when I decided to go to work late.

The drive to GP was a bit dicey and I did an unexpected 180 in a curve on 392, but there were no other cars and I stayed on the road. I wasn't going too fast, the car in front of me had no trouble. I parked next to him in the GP parking lot.

First run down the right side of Eleysian Fields was sweet. There wasn't as much snow here as there was on my land 35 miles to the west, but it was still a nice quality snow.

2nd run was down Olympian. Firm base was felt under the fluff, but it skied pretty well and was especially nice in the drifted areas.

I ran into my friend on the ski patrol and together we checked out some of the closed areas, including Zeus that was drifted up very nicely on skier's left, a foray into the Hercules woods which involved 2 stream crossings, and then 2 hikes up to the top of the closed chair 2 to ski Atlas and Aesops which were quite nice. Photos of those attached.

Sounds like patrol has finally relaxed a bit. I remember in my teens and even during my 20's when I was local to GP some obnoxious yelling to put safety bars down, you can't do this, you can't do that, kind of attitude seemed to be the prevailing mood on patrol (about 15-20yrs ago now!). Not that it actually stopped us much of course.

Always good turns when you are first or only ones. Did they leave a handful of trees to ski by the new trail/Zeus apparently. Or maybe the wwods toward Trojan from the new trail? Can't be very much left of the original glade though...

Do you ever try the 'verboten' Olymp glade (skiers left). Used to be a couple of logs in there, but avoidable when you'd done it for a couple runs and knew where they were...

We skied the "Hercules" glade which is the woods between Trojan and the new Hercules trail (right next to Zeus). It was skiable, but we had to cross 2 streams to get outta there and my skis got wet/iced. The rain on friday left some pretty wet spots along the way...I have the same problem on my xc ski trails on my land. Did a lot of scraping last night after work.

Ski patrol is fine during the weekdays. The 2 full-time guys are my friends and very like-minded. Both are pretty new (2-3yrs)...one of them is Acid Christ formerly of The Canyons ski patrol...he's got another nickname from those days, but I won't identify him here. There are still some of the "old" patrollers that will enforce every rule on the weekends.

I don't know what patrol would have done if it was anyone else, but they know me, and I was pretty much escorted by them all morning, which was pretty sweet. They wanted to ski Herc glade as well, but couldn't go alone, but with my company we were a team. The line left of Olympian is not only very steep, but has some treefall...it is very tight anyway and not really great skiing unless there are feet of natural snow.

There was probably 6-8" of natural cover with 4-6" of new snow on top, more in some places, less in others as it was quite windy that day.
