Day 26: One of my best runs ever.

No, that's not deceptive exaggeration, or even hyperbole. I've been skiing for nearly 38 years now, and today I had one of my best lift-served runs ever out in a place Bob Dangerous calls Fat City, beyond the boundary ropeline on No Name Peak. It's the first video scene in the day's movie:

[skimovies=http://www.skimovies.com/flv/Snowbasin_2008-01-22.flv]http://www.skimovies.com/flv/Snowbasin_2008-01-22_thumb.jpg[/skimovies]

That video documents 22 untracked inches of pixie dust that fell yesterday on top of what was a big storm in the Ogden-area mountains last Thursday, on top of...on top of... Honestly, it was waist deep in spots. I've never before experienced a 20-second continuous face shot. There was more snow surrounding Snowbasin than I've ever seen, and the roadside snowbanks are positively massive even as UDOT knocks the banks back following each storm.

The Kid and I ventured north as Outdoor Retailer opened with Backcontry Basecamp at Snowbasin today, and Bob D was my tour guide. He's been bugging me to join him up there when conditions are right for three years now, and they don't get any more right than they were today. Now, I was fortunate to have Bob around, for No Name Peak and its sidecountry is littered with massive cliff bands and a convoluted topography that makes it hard to figure out just where you are and where you're going. I never would've found my way into some of the spots we visited today, even though they're clearly visible from Earl's Lodge, and in the treed areas it would be oh-so-easy to get cliffed out atop a 60-footer.

We were still scoring untracked at 3 pm right smack dab in the center of the in-bounds ski area, too. Groomers were spongy packed powder. A late trip out the traverse into Mt. Ogden Bowl yielded vast expanses of above-treeline untracked, but only after a slough tumbled off the cliffs above, stopping me in my tracks until everything stopped moving in front of me.

It's stuff like this that makes me understand why I was so "uninspired" by Sunday's conditions.

Damn. I've always been curious why you haven't followed Bob's lead and taken more advantage of Snowbasin. No need to give me your treatise on Alta , but Snowbasin with big snow is a treat.

Great shots and video (except for the blank second half) plus snow and sun. I have to get back to Snowbasin and try Powder Mountain on my next Utah trip. I have a friend who lives at the bottom of Strawberry where I stayed during the Olympics and on trip following year.

Nice...sad I missed it...stupid work... Grrr...

Looks just like what me, Tele John and Pat were rippin up at Alta on Monday...it was "only" 17" at alta, but whats 5" in the long run eh???

We were also finding waist deep for sure....face shots GALORE...nothing like spitting out snow...

Looks like another foot for Friday, a little day off from snow on Saturday and an estimated "big one" coming in for Monday...

LET IT SNOW..

AWESOME pics & video Marc...ohhh, wish I was there!! Utah pow rules the universe!!

Hope to to back out to SLC between March 3rd-6th...would love to hit Snowbasin, since I only skied it one time back in 2001. Now looking to acquire a pair of last year's Gotamas, if anyone knows of pair for sale.

Here's a "shout out" to M2, Skidog, Bob D., Tele Jon, Sam, et al.

I'll place my order for one of these President's weekend. Not that there was anything wrong with Solitude, but the combination of terrain, high speed lifts and lack of crowds at Snowbasin would make a powder day especially rewarding. 30/20 would not be too difficult I think. No Suunto watch for this one?

FYI Adam did 33/23 on a quiet snowy day at Mammoth yesterday, but it was nowhere as deep as this.

Western weather quieted down last week vs. the epic first half of January. Bridger was the big winner with 4 feet and the Tetons got 2. So no surprise the northern mountains were favored in Utah. Anyone there going to hit the PowMow leftovers this weekend?

But November was warm & dry in Utah, so none of this counts
The swift recovery is illustrative of Utah's superiority in snow reliability. Some other regions with the November drought took longer (and in the case of Continental Divide Colorado still working on it) to get up to speed.

I suppose it will snow all week and then stop next Friday upon my arrival.

Oh well, but should that happen, at least there's plenty of base :)

We have 3 more storms lined up between now and the end of January.

Sometimes when you are skiing and the conditions are so great, you have that uncontrollable smile. Hell I got the smile just from the damn VIDEO.

Sharon, I hate to say it, but also will stop snowing as I will be in UT next weekend too...

As for the 3 storms, I never count my inches till they've fallen (an old eastern habit). You never know which way a storm will track, etc...

Though, actually, if it could not snow on Jan 31 & Feb 3 that would be great! (I am driving i-80 from/to colo then). We can order the weather up that specifically - can't we? can't we?

Awesome video and pictures! Damn, I wish I could enjoy more days like that! Thank you for sharing!

There is a slight chance that I may be moving to the Ogden area in the next couple of months. It's either there or a place an hour south of me (closer to the Alps) in Germany. After watching that video, I think I'm leaning towards Utah :D I've never skied there and would absolutely love to call Snowbasin my home mountain. It's been a dream of mine for some time to live within 30 minutes of really good skiing. Hmmm, this may be my chance......

Hill AFB?

That would be it. I'm not military, just a dirty contractor  It's afforded me the opportunity to live in some pretty great places though!

I just checked snow reports for the western US - man, blowing the Alps away! Be forewarned - wherever I move, a cruddy winter or two ensues. Well, except the first year I was in Japan. But ever since... I mean

I should know more on my situation in a week or two. Whatever happens, I'll be pretty happy either way.
