Snowbird, UT - For the first time in the history of the Subaru Freeskiing World Tour (FWT), Snowbird Ski and Summer Resort will host the final stop of the tour on the Utah ski area's famed Silver Fox and North Baldy venues. An international field of the world's best skiers will descend upon the Wasatch Mountains next week, March 16-21, to battle for overall World Tour points and for the Subaru Freeskiing World Championships title.
Los Angeles, CA - After receiving the highest number of votes by the public for his tribute to his mother, Mary, it was announced this week that U.S. Olympic Snowboarder Nick Baumgartner is the the winner of the 2010 O.C. Tanner Inspiration Award. The Iron River, Mich., athlete will have the opportunity to present his mother with a 14k gold commemorative ring that honors Olympic mentors.
Denver, CO - SnowSports Industries America (SIA) is reporting a six-year attendance high for its annual Snow Show recently held for the first time at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Jan. 28-31, 2010. The sold-out Snow Show attracted 18,932 attendees and featured over 3,100 booths representing 845 snow sports brands, including 125 new exhibitors.
Mt. Hood, OR - Oregon's Mt. Hood Meadows Ski Resort is offering a special $10 3–9 p.m. evening lift ticket this Sunday to wrap up the Meadows After Dark night operations for the 2009-10 ski and snowboard season. The $10 ticket for Sunday can be purchased online or at the resort.
Waterville Valley, NH - Waterville Valley's third ski and snowboard deal of the season is coming up at the New Hampshire resort next weekend, March 20 and 21. In honor of the 21st Winter Olympic Games, both days will feature the resort's Olympic $21 Learn to Ski and Snowboard Special including a beginner lesson, skis or Burton snowboard rental equipment and a beginner area lift ticket for the day.
Copper Mountain, CO - Copper Mountain ski resort in Colorado is celebrating St. Patrick's Day tonight with a street party, free live music by Canned Haggis, a St. Patty's Day-themed En Fuego festival (aptly named "O'Fuego"), restaurant and bar specials, shamrocks, leprechauns and lots of green.
Whistler (BC), Canada - The last downhill training run at the 2010 Paralympic Winter Games was canceled Friday due to heavy snowfall in Whistler.
Are, Sweden - In a replay of the Olympic women's moguls skiing event at Cypress a month ago, Hannah Kearney, of Norwich, Vt., returned to the World Cup to win, with Canada's Jenn Heil second and Olympic bronze medalist Shannon Bahrke, of Tahoe City, Calif., third. Patrick Deneen, of Cle Elum, Wash., had his best finish of the year in second for the men behind Jesper Bjoernlund of Sweden and followed by Maxime Gringas of Canada.
Tignes, France - Switzerland's Iouri Podladtchikov returned from Winter X Games 14 in Aspen, Colo., with a silver medal, a fourth place finish from the Olympics in Vancouver, and can now add gold to that list from his win Friday in men's Snowboard SuperPipe at Winter X Games Europe. France's Mathieu Crepel, who finished tenth at the Vancouver Olympics, was close behind to land the silver, with Bellefontaine, Ohio's Louie Vito taking third.
Hancock, MA - STRIDE Adaptive Sports will hold its Great Race 2010 on Saturday morning at Jiminy Peak Mountain Resort in Hancock. The adaptive ski race starts at 9:00 a.m. in front of the ski and snowboard resort's Crane Lodge.
Grindlewald, Switzerland - John Teller, of Mammoth Lakes, Calif., led the U.S. in 13th at a men's ski cross World Cup in Grindlewald Friday won by Norway's Audun Groenvold. Caitlin Ciccone, of Littleton, N.H., finished 19th to post her best career result as Kelsey Serwa won to lead a Canadian sweep of the women's podium.
Aspen, CO - Four-time Winter X Games medalist, Jen Hudak, won her first X Games gold last month in her hometown of Aspen, Colo., in Women's Skiing SuperPipe. Competing with a full international field in Tignes on Friday, Hudak led the pack from her first run through her third run at the inaugural Winter X Games Europe. She was unstoppable.
Valmalenco, Italy - Stratton Mountain, Vt.'s Lindsey Jacobellis Alex Pullin of Australia have won the second to last snowboard cross race of the 2010 LG Snowboard FIS World Cup, held Friday in Valmalenco.
Tignes, France - Tom Wallisch, a 22-year-old from Pittsburgh, Penn., made his first Winter X Games appearance in Aspen, Colo., just last month competing in Big Air and Slopestyle, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively. Today in the Skiing Slopestyle final at Winter X Games Europe in Tignes, only one point separated Wallisch from Breckenridge, Colo.'s Bobby Brown. Wallisch went all out and landed himself his first Winter X Games gold.
Tignes, France - Jenny Jones went into Friday's Winter X Games Europe Women's Snowboard Slopestyle final in the number one spot after she led the entire field in eliminations on Wednesday. Jones takes home her first Winter X Games Europe gold after taking home gold at Winter X Games in Aspen, Colo., in both 2009 and 2010 – the first woman from Great Britain to earn a Winter X Games medal.
