Park City, UT - Unseasonably warm temperatures and lack of recent precipitation has left Park City Mountain Resort's lower ski slopes brown. As a result, the popular ski and snowboard resort has pushed back its scheduled opening day for the 2008-09 season, originally slated for this Saturday, November 22.

No new date has been announced. Park City Mountain Resort’s snowmaking team has patiently waited for the temperatures to cooperate but a high pressure has loomed over the Utah region for the past week. Last night the overnight low temperature at the top of the lower mountain PayDay lift was 50 degrees, with a low at the plaza level of 38 degrees under the current temperature inversion. The 10-day forecast looks very similar to the temperatures this past week, but it takes just one storm cycle to get the mountain in prime condition, ski area officials assert.

Ultimately, Park City Mountain Resort still needs a total of 72 hours of ideal temperatures (average of 20 degrees or less) to provide optimal conditions on lower mountain runs. This includes at least 24 hours to complete snowmaking on the Homerun trail and at least 60 hours of ideal temperatures to complete PayDay and Treasure Hollow.

Legacy Sports will open for the season this Saturday, November 22 from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., with a 20 percent discount on all outerwear. Season pass holders will receive an additional 10 percent discount. The Alpine Coaster will open on Wednesday, November 26 with operations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Kristi's Coffee Cafe will also open Wednesday, November 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Legacy Cafe and Legends Bar & Grill will open when the resort opens for skiing and riding. Gorgoza Park, a snow tubing park operated by Park City Mountain Resort near Parley's Summit, will announce its official opening date in the coming weeks.

Other Park City-area ski resorts are still keeping their fingers crossed. Opening day at The Canyons is tentatively scheduled for Thanksgiving Day, November 27th, while Deer Valley traditionally waits until early December. This year's opening day at Deer Valley is presently slated for December 6th.
