Mahre Twins Return to Lake Placid

Lake Placid, NY (Wednesday, January 22, 2003) - For the first time since the 1980 Winter Olympic Games, legendary skiers Phil and Steve Mahre will be together in Lake Placid.

The date is Tuesday, January 28. The occasion is an IBM Corporate Challenge at Whiteface Mountain and Lake Placid. Also at 11 AM, the twins will race each other head-to-head on the NASTAR course located on Lower Valley at Whiteface.

Phil Mahre, winner of the 1980 Olympic silver medal in slalom on Whiteface Mountain, followed this achievement with an Olympic gold in the same discipline four years later in Sarajevo.

Twin brother Steve, born four minutes later, captured Sarajevo silver. He also won the World Giant Slalom title in 1982.

They are the most accomplished skiers in American history in the technical events. The identical twins will instruct, coach, ski with and schmooze with IBM employees and guests on Tuesday at Whiteface Mountain. In recent years, Phil and Steve have participated in USSA-sanctioned clinics at Whiteface Mountain as coaches, but never simultaneously. Steve Mahre, in fact, is on a JIII coaching staff at Whiteface this week for a one week training camp.
