Weather Knocks Out Kitz Training

Kitzbühel, Austria (Thursday, January 23, 2003) - More snow forced the second straight day of downhill training cancellation Thursday in Kitzbuehel. Unlike Wednesday's cancellation when racers never left their hotels, Thursday saw a morning long wait for clouds to clear before FIS officials finally pulled the plug nearly two hours after the scheduled 11:00 a.m. start.

The weather and low-hanging clouds broke right at start time with two forerunners making it down before clouds moved in over the course and heavy snow continued to fall. One of the key factors in addition to visibility was the mounding of snow on the side of the course as slippers tried in vain to get the course race ready.

The cancellation of training doesn't change the race schedule. A good training run was held Tuesday. The U.S. will go with four racers in the super G Friday and downhill Friday including favorite Daron Rahves (Truckee, CA), Bode Miller (Franconia, NH), Marco Sullivan (Squaw Valley, CA) and Jake Fiala (Breckenridge, CO). Sullivan, making his Kitzbuehel debut, failed to finish Tuesday's training but was still expected to start.
