Bretton Woods Ski Legends Weekend to Feature NE Telemark Festival and NENSA Women's Day
Bretton Woods, NH (Sunday, January 26, 2003) - Bretton Woods Mountain Resort will celebrate the history and legends of skiing with its third annual Ski Legends Weekend Feb. 1 and 2. This exploration of local ski history will include New England Ski Museum exhibits, a Classic Ski-Film Festival, the New England Telemark Festival and the New England Nordic Ski Association Women's Day.
Skiers and riders may start their day with First Tracks, led by Bretton Woods Mountain Hosts. The Bethlehem Express high-speed quad lift will begin running a half hour early, at 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday, for those who like to be the first to carve the corduroy or play in the powder. Following First Tracks, skiers may take some runs with New England Ski Museum representative Glenn Parkinson, who takes to the trails with vintage 1930s attire and equipment!
At The Mount Washington Hotel, a Ski Legends Weekend Film Festival will feature five classic ski films, running consecutively starting at 3 p.m. The festival will begin with Slalom, an early classic shot in St. Moritz, by acclaimed filmmaker Dr. Arnold Fanck. At 4:30 p.m., Dr. Quackenbush Skis the Headwall is a famous ski comedy following the antics of Quackenbush at Mount Cranmore, Wildcat and Tuckerman Ravine. White Ecstasy (The Ski Chase), starting at 5:30 p.m., is a vintage favorite featuring great European skiers at Hannes Schneider's beloved St. Anton. At 8:30 p.m., return to Tuckerman with Schlitz on Mount Washington, a Chaplin-esque comedic adventure filmed in the world-renowned ravine. Finally at 9p.m., Sun Valley Serenade is a lighthearted romantic comedy featuring the music of the Glenn Miller Orchestra. This film received three Oscar nominations in 1941. Admission to the Film Festival is complimentary and open to the public.
Running simultaneously with the Ski Legends Weekend will be the New England Telemark Festival. Celebrating a style of mountain-touring skiing, telemark skiers use a free-heel technique and specialized equipment to maneuver turns. For the price of a full-day lift ticket, skiers may take part in all Festival events and activities. Registration will take place on the second level of the Bretton Woods Base Lodge from 8 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. Equipment manufacturers will be on hand with demos, and on-snow clinics will be offered twice each day at 10:15 a.m. and 1:15 p.m. Other New England Telemark Festival events include an Uphill/Downhill Race, a Vintage Ski Contest and an Apres Ski Party.
